Inspirations

This page contains examples of artists work that has intrigued and inspired me:

The Ames brothers

The Ames brothers (Coby Schultz and Barry Ament) both born in Montana are well known for creating quality t-shirt designs since 1994. Since then they have received Grammy nominations and have made t-shirts for celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Coldplay and Sting.

What I like about this design is the way that the racetrack looks 3D and appears to have depth, which makes the design look as if it's comming out of the t-shirt. The shirt colour is bland which makes the colourful cars stand out. It reminds me of an old scalextric set which bring back memories to me which makes this a memorable design with lots of appeal.
This design has a cut-out effect, which makes the design look as if it was created using cut out pieces of card. It uses the primary colours red, yellow and blue. These colours are opposites on the colour wheel and they compliment each-other in this design to make it eye catching and stand out.

This design has been created using a stencil effect. I like this design because it is ironic that a squirrel is holding a grenade, because it looks as if it should be holding a nut instead. This makes the design humorous, also the squirrel has a smirk his face; this makes him look devious and makes you  wonder what his intension with the grenade might be.

Hattomonkey

Hattomonkey is a Russian design studio. It was founded in 2008 in Novosibirsk. They specialise in packaging designs.

Hattomonkey has created this design for a carton of milk. It has been designed to look like the well known superhero Batman. This look has been created with a Batman face on the front of the carton with the top flaps folding up to re-create his ears.
This is another milk carton design by Hattomonkey. It uses coloured 'X''s to build up the picture of a smiling cow; which is ironic because it's a carton of milk. On the other side is the ingredients which have been drawn in the same simplistic style as to not overwhelm the consumer. I like the way Hattomonkey has folded up the top corners of the carton to simulate the cows ears.

Lobulo Designs

Lobulo is a Barcelona based illustrator who creates advertisements and and designs using a range of different techniques. His illustrations are famous because of their outrageousness, colourfulness and attention to detail.

This is a design created for a skateboarding brand Lanikai. The design depicts a yellow skeleton of a woman on a bed of roses, segments of the woman's body are missing and a bit of meat is floating beside her. This ties in with the caption above that says "eat meat". What I like about this design is that it's very colourful, the colours seem to stand out more due to the simplistic shapes and bold outlines.

This is another tshirt design for Lanikai. It shows a dog with and erection with the words "Hot Dog" above which is designed to be humerous. Lobulo uses simple shapes and block colours to create this design which enables it to stand out and look really bold.
Here is a christmas card created for FRIO DE CO**NES by Lobulo,. It has been crafted using card and then photographed and edited on a computer. What I like about this design is that some elements are 2D such as the earths crust and the trees. Some bits are 3D like the writing at the bottom. This design is very colourful and eye-catching which will draw people to it and make them look at it closer.
This is a CD cover design based on Lady Ga-Ga. It has been created out of card, photographed then computer edited. The cover resembles Ga-Ga's face with her trademark sunglasses ands hair, although the right side of her face is cut open to reveal the inside of her head such as her skull, muscle tissue and eyeball. This creates a surreal feeling for the cover through two extremes. On one side is the normal Ga-Ga and on the right is a skeleton representation of her . This reflects her crazy and flamboyant personality.
Young and Rubicam

Young & Rubicam are a company that specializes in advertising, digital and social media, sales promotion, direct marketing and brand identity consulting. Young & Rubicam employ 6,500 designers in 186 offices in 90 countries which makes them an incredibly diverse company.

Here is a poster design created by  Young & Rubicam it was designed to advertise the new baby g-shock watch range for casio. This poster is an effective way of advertising because a tank is generally associated with being camouflage colour so that it can blend in with its environment. This tank however is the opposite to camouflage; as its bright pink. This will draw attention to the poster because its not a sight that anyone has seen before therefore they’ll be likely to investigate what its advertising. The poster focuses mainly on the tank although it has the company name in the top left hand corner and a copy of the baby g-shock watch they are advertising in the bottom right. They have chosen a pink watch so that it ties in with the colour of the tank.

Mats Ottdal

Mats Ottdal is a Norwegian graphic designer who is very popular for his unique packaging designs. His designs are colourful, captivating and unique.
Here are some penguin themed drinks cartons created by Mats Ottdal. He has used the fold out flaps to incorporate arms and legs into the designs which makes them very innovative and fun which would appeal to kids especially. The designs are fun and he uses different coloured penguins to represent the different flavours.

These are some more carton designs by Mats Ottdal. They are are designed to look like the flavour they contain which makes it easier for the consumer to distinguish between the different flavours. They also appear more appetising when presented as a piece of fruit because it emphasises being healthy.
Genevieve Gauckler

Genevieve Gauckler is a graphic designer from Paris. Her clients include Bour Jois and Coca  Cola.I like her style because she uses a variety of bold colours and lighting effects to create her designs.

What I like about this design is the way it represents a calendar in a unique style. Genevieve uses cartoon men with numbers on their heads to show the dates and the days. The white hands on the floor could represent time but it also creates a sense of confusion as they are all pointing in different directions. The unusual lighting creates a rainbow effect in the background and the yellow lighting effect on the disco ball makes it look like the sun. This creates a bright and happy feel to the poster. It also features flying birds and graffiti to give it a modern twist.

This poster features the same style men as the poster before. In this design the cartoon men are holding up letters to spell out the word "FLAUNT". This corresponds to the blob man at the front who is wearing a hat, almost as if he is "FLAUNTING" it, which means to show off. The rainbow lighting effect makes the design colourful and visually appealing.
